Why Spanking Shouldn’t be Practiced

30th Jun 2011

People have been arguing on whether we should spank our kids or not for years. There are some opinions saying it’s the best way to discipline kids, while there are also some saying it’s the worse you can do. There are a lot of people saying nothing good comes out of spanking, but how true is this?

I do not spank my kid as a way of discipline, and this is why:

What is discipline about? It’s about teaching the child how to control his behavior, and not controlling it directly. That is the difference between hitting and disciplining a child without spanking. Discipline without spanking will make him realize what he did wrong and why he shouldn’t do it again, while spanking may teach him not to repeat the behavior but it will not make him understand why.

It may seem easier to spank your kids at times, but studies have shown that children who were spanked learn to solve problems through violence. They tend to hit when they don’t get their way, especially with other kids. Besides, experts have also found out that children who were spanked will behave for awhile, but would go back to misbehaving in a minute. In the end, nothing good comes out of the spanking.

There is a huge difference between having the child respect you, and having him get scared of you. You can earn a child’s respect by showing him that you respect him too, such as disciplining him without spanking. Spanking may seem to show the child who is in charge, but it doesn’t necessarily make him earn your respect.

There are alternatives to spanking that a parent can choose from. You can choose to take a privilege away (such as not allowing her to watch TV for the day) or you can give her an extra house chore as a form of punishment. Doing so allows you to discipline your child without hurting her.
