What Your Kids Want Most Is Time, Not Money

One of the easiest things for a parent is just to hand the kids a few dollars and tell them to go have a good time. And chances are, they are the ones who came knocking for money in the first place. But in most cases, what your kids truly want is to spend some quality time with you. They are aware you are pulled in many different directions, so they try to help by getting out of your way. By giving them money, you are making it possible for them to get on their way.

Today’s rapid paced world makes it difficult to find spare time to meet with your family much less spend quality bonding time. Most of the time, families meet each other a the door, as they come and go; they see each other at night, but by then they are too tired to do anything together.

Sit down meals are often a thing of the past, and most families eat standing up or at a restaurant somewhere. Conversation time is cut out of the equation, with a drop of time for talking and listening. It’s the wise family that schedules time to be together.

There should be at least one day per week scheduled for the family to spend some quality time together and alone. Sleepovers cannot be schedule on that particular night. Take the phone off the hook or any activity or conversation will be constantly interrupted. If you’ve not done this all along and your kids are older, it will be difficult at first but soon everyone will look forward to it.

It doesn’t matter what you do. Only try to be together no matter what you do. Talk to your children, asked them questions, be interested in their world and get involved if needed. Ask them about their day, and inquire about their challenges and successes.

Many families enjoy board games. If you’re watching your budget, most board games can be found inexpensively at discount stores and yard sales. You probably already have the basic games such as cards, dominoes and checkers. You can read to younger children. Older children may enjoy discussing a book the whole family has read.

Crafts and cooking are something the whole family can participate into. Creating projects together gives you the opportunity to learn a little more about each other, and to converse as you create. Remember when your own dad helped you build something? Or maybe you remember time spent baking with mom in the kitchen.

Always compliment your children and emphasize the positive not the negative. They should know they can always count on you. You can never hug them too much, and that special note inside the lunchbox is always a wonderful thing to find.

As long as you are together, it doesn’t matter where you spend time. A camping trip or fishing expedition would be fun and inexpensive. Camping out in the back yard would be exciting.

Make sure you try to attend as many activities as you can, if your kids are involved. Investing time and love on your children is not hard, and the dividends will be great over time.

When someone has a new baby, they receive many gifts. Usually they find themselves with an abundance of flowers and stuffed animals. Why not consider baby gift baskets for the baby and parents. Our new baby gift baskets make great gifts and most come with keepsakes, blankies, rattles and more!
