What is the Baby Shower Etiquette For a 2nd Time Mum?

What is the etiquette for throwing a baby shower for a mum who already has at least one other child? Do you have to throw a full on baby shower each time she is expecting or should you only celebrate a mum’s first pregnancy? The answer may be to hold a ‘Baby Sprinkle’ instead.
baby Sprinkles are basically like a scaled down version of a baby shower, designed for those woman who are expecting again after already having one or more children. The name coming from the idea that the new baby will only need to be ‘sprinkled’ with gifts rather than ‘showered’.
So what’s the difference between a baby shower and a baby sprinkle? Well, the main area that might be different is the gift giving. Often, once mum already has one child she will have accumulated a lot of toys, clothes, bedding items, feeding equipment etc. Therefore, many of the usual new baby gifts may not be appropriate. In these situations it’s a good idea to think about what essential items the new mum will need a lot of in the early days which she won’t still have from first time around. Items such as packets of nappies, nappy cream, wet wipes, baby body wash and shampoo, colic drops, baby paracetomol and so on are all appropriate. These items may not be as cute as some baby gifts but they are definitely going to be needed and appreciated – and you can always present them beautifully in a baby hamper or dressed up as a nappy cake complete with ribbons and tags.
Another idea may be to make mum the focus of the gifts – i.e. buy gifts designed to help with pregnancy or labour or just to make mum’s life a bit easier when the newborn arrives. Pampering toiletries designed specifically for pregnancy, dressing gown and slippers for the maternity ward, some lovely chocolates to enjoy, even some home cooked meals that she can put in the freezer so she doesn’t have to cook for a while after the birth are all gifts that would be very gratefully received. After all, although this is not her first child, the mum-to-be has still gone through many hard months of pregnancy and she still has to go through labour, not to mention more sleepless nights with a newborn plus other children to look after.
Another area in which the baby sprinkle may differ from a baby shower is the games. First time around it’s a lot of fun playing games testing out mum-to- be’s knowledge of babies and having guests fill in advice books. This time around mum obviously knows a lot more about looking after babies therefore the choice and number of games played might differ. Mum to be might even have her children with her at the party – maybe try to play a game where the kids can join in. Games like ‘pin the nappy pin on the baby’ or ‘baby charades’ can be fun for all ages.
Baby sprinkles are usually a more scaled down affair and therefore the venue should also be appropriate. Holding the party at home (or the home of the host) for a small number of guests might be more appropriate than arranging a large scale party at an expensive venue. Friends and family will usually want to celebrate the arrival of each and every baby that mums has, but they are less likely to want to spend a lot of money on the party if it’s not a first child.
A baby sprinkle may be a smaller scale affair than a baby shower, but it’s just as lovely for mum-to-be as a way of celebrating the imminent arrival of her long awaited baby.
