Rarely Heard Facts About Babies

Kids get bigger faster than anybody realizes. It only takes a moment for a ball of cells to begin forming a fully functioning human being. In just forty short weeks they go from those few cells to living creatures who are able to live on their own. Even after birth the changes happen quickly-personalities and decision making seem to happen almost at once. You probably already know a little bit about babies-things like diaper changes and how long it takes babies to begin speaking are pretty common knowledge. Here are some interesting tidbits and trivia about infants that you might have fun learning.
Babies are not skilled at telling the difference between most of the colors they see. It will take some time after a baby is born for his eyes to finish maturing and for the synapses between them and his brain to be complete. Babies see primary colors better than any other, which is why you should choose those colors for his nursery and toys. Bold and bright colors like reds and greens and blues or even white and black are the easiest colors for babies to see. Babies can’t tell the difference between pastels.
This is one of the reasons that babies will sometimes choose one toy over another. Pastels are meant more for an adult’s sense of cuteness while the black and white things that are so often turned down are actually better for your son or daughter’s development. Most babies are born knowing instinctually how to swim and how to hold their breath. This instinct starts to fade very quickly, though. This is one of the reasons many experts are in favor of women having water births. Swimming from the womb into life is supposed to make the transition of being born less traumatic for the infant. They believe the water helps them go from being completely dependent upon their mothers to being independent functioning creatures smoother than they do through traditional hospital births.
You know about babies growing tails right? That’s right! For the first few weeks after conception takes place your baby will grow a tail as he grows the rest of his vital organs.
Experts agree that too much mercury is terrible for pregnancy but there are some forms of fish that are mercury free and eating them is a good idea. Eating salmon while you are pregnant is good because salmon is chock full of healthy nutrients for you and your baby and it does not contain mercury the way other types of fish do. There are those who say that a woman who eats fish regularly during her pregnancy will give birth to babies with better developed brains and a better capacity for communication than babies carried by women who did not eat fish regularly during their pregnancies. If you do not eat or particularly like fish, don’t worry-none of this has been scientifically proven as fact yet.
