Have you ever thought of getting lamb’s wool for your infants? It’s the best. Babies and wool have similarities, they are both tender, beautiful and huggable.

Science have yet to discover how to replicate the most multifaceted of all fabrics, wool. Whoever thought that the sheep’s wool has many uses is unidentified in its history. I can only imagine it must have been a mother living in an extreme climate of cold, and by watching these amazing creatures got the idea that it would also keep her baby warm and dry. A number of the original and premium cloths made from wool date back to 500 BC and was seen in a community in Greece. On the other hand, the earliest surviving fabric dates back to 1500 BC that was found in a Danish marshland.

Even though the sheep lived in an environment where temperatures can go to extremes, they were able to adjust because of their ideal and dense woven coats. Wool is a fabulous material. Sheep are protected from extreme cold or heat because of their tough wicker fleece coat. Wools are able to retain moisture in a quarter of its weight. The fiber’s outer cells are water resistant while the inner cells are moist absorber. It is a fire inhibitor because of its ability to hold in moisture. It gradually dries so the wearer stays warm. Lanolin, the fat in wool, is the reason why it is resilient to water. Wool also resists dust mites and bacteria, and naturally disinfects. The wool’s positive features make it a perfect fabric for baby garments, bedspreads and crib covers. And because of its absorbent nature, wool will take on dyes revealing richer, deeper colors. Countries that have the largest production of wool are Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina.

The sheep’s ‘hair’ before was not as the thick wool fleece as it is today. It was rough more similar of a deer or goat. It’s form has developed into what it is today through domestication. It was around 10,000 BC that West Asians started domesticating sheep. Some time ago, as bare as they must have been, sheep were part of the riches of Babylon. They were nurtured to produce food, milk and cheese. They spent thousands of years reproducing sheep with the best hair in an attempt that the hair can be spun into a fiber. Yet, clothes were produced from spinning in nearly 5,000 B.C. When sheep reproduction progressed, between 3000 and 1000 B.C., the Persians, Greeks and Romans were the reason of sheep dispersed all over Europe. It was in Winchester England in 50 A.D. where the earliest wool factory was instituted. England was exporting wool textiles as two thirds of its foreign commerce by the year 1660.

As the production expanded, the wool spinning assignment was given to the eldest unmarried daughter, hence where the word ‘spinster’ derived. It twirled around a ‘weasel’ (rod) and made a swirling, popping sound as it twirled. Recognize it? That is where the term ‘Pop Goes the Weasel’ came from. It was creations, however, like the spinning jenny that thrust the business to advance.

The tenderness and coziness of natural wool blankets and crib covers, including car seat covers is a sure treat for your baby. We are no different from the first mothers long ago who sought the best means to protect and care for their children – as mothers, that is what we do, and as a grandmother, you can be sure my grandbaby has a wool fleece blanket in her crib and one for the floor, and traveling. Isn’t it wonderful to watch her enclosed with one of nature’s most magnificent fabrics, in silence and under a deep sleep.
