The birth of a new baby is a wonderful and special time. The first weeks are when you really want to focus building the bond with your new baby and taking care of yourself. So what are the steps for getting ready for baby? All the new responsibilities can be a scary and overwhelming. One way not to feel so overwhelmed to do a little advance planning. Here are a couple of ideas to help the first weeks run a bit smoother.

Plan for Time Visitors and Time For Yourself

It seems as soon as you arrive home, everyone wants to see the new baby! Of course you want those closest to you to meet your beautiful new child, but you also want time to get to know your new baby. The best way to balance expectations is to let everyone know the best times for them to visit. While you want to share this very special occasion with those close to you, you will also need time to rest and relax. Make a sign for your front door “Mommy and baby Sleeping. Please Do Not Ring Door Bell” and use it to let everyone know you are not accepting guests at the moment.

Create Meals in Advance

The first couple of weeks at home you will be very busy. Shopping, figuring out menus and cooking will not be on the top of your list. One simple but over looked idea when getting ready for baby is to make main course dishes, such as lasagna or a hearty soup and tuck them away in the freezer. This way your first week or so at home anyone can prepare dinner by simple thawing and heating a pre-made dish… Another wonderful idea is to let family or close know you would appreciate it if they prepared a casserole or similar item for everyone to enjoy.

Bring Home a New Brother or Sister?

If there are other children at home, they will be very excited about having a new brother or sister. To make the transition smoother for everyone, it’s best to include your kids in new baby activities and care as much as possible.

For example, one idea would be to have small presents to give to your children whenever you guests drop by and have a present for the baby. Younger child feel very special when they get to help take care of their new brother or sister. Make sure each sibling has a special task related to the baby that is assigned especially to them, such as singing to the baby before an afternoon nap or helping you dress the baby. This will help create a bond between everyone and also curb jealousy sometimes associated with all the attention a new baby needs.

Getting ready for baby involves a little extra planning and a few extra steps which make your first weeks with you baby much easier. Not only will your home be calmer, but you will have you more time to rest and recover from giving birth.
