Five Manners Your Child Should Learn

28th Jun 2011

Our world wasn’t always what it is. Once upon a time, mothers stay at home and children didn’t have online games to play with that it’s easier to teach them proper manners. Nowadays, parents are so busy with things but this is not an excuse to not be able to teach children proper manners.

Below are the top five manners that every child needs to master before they turn nine years old.

Never interrupt adults when they are talking. If you’ve ever tried having your son tug at your skirt while you’re talking to a friend or your spouse, then you know how annoying it is (not to mention that it’s rude). Teach your child that conversations shouldn’t be interrupted unless on emergencies, and it should always start with an “excuse me”.

Keep negative opinions to yourself. The world hardly cares what you dislike, so do not make negative opinions about anything – sports, school or neighbors – there’s no excuse.

Never comment on people’s appearance – unless it’s to give a compliment. Kids today are so used to blurting out what they want to say without even thinking if it’s going to hurt other people’s feelings. Being young is definitely not an excuse, so teach your child to always keep their mouth shut unless they have something nice to say.

Say “thank you” to your friends’ parents. This is a very simple yet important gesture when you go over to your friend’s house. Not a lot of kids do this today, so teach your child an act that will make you proud as a parent. This will make people want your child to come over instead of hating him every moment he’s in other people’s home.

Close your mouth while chewing. Really, this is basics yet not a lot of people do it. Nobody wants to see what’s inside your child’s mouth and the sound of food being chewed is just disgusting.
