Baby Safety is a Must

That precious little one of yours needs to be safe and protected from dangers when they are at their most vulnerable. One of these times is when they are sleeping and this is when baby safety is crucial. You can not just go and select baby furniture or baby bedding based on how cute it is. That crib may be “to die for” but unfortunately some inferior infant furniture products have made this common saying a literal and devastating reality. Cribs and mattresses that are not made to exacting safety requirements have ended in suffocation and death for infants, and this could have been avoided. There can never be too much attention given to baby safety in the home setting.

Recalls and Safety Measures

In 1995 the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that older, used cribs should be destroyed for infant safety reasons. This announcement was made because many of these products have been found unsafe. Some products have gaps in the construction that are dangerous to baby safety because they can trap a baby’s head, arm or leg. Other nursery furnishings have been found to have faulty safety latches that allow the railings to slide or fall without warning.

These older baby furniture products may contain lead paint, or other toxic materials. Even many baby bedding items have been found to be suffocation hazards or made with flammable mattress fillers. Child safety has become a great concern of parents and the government especially now that we are able to sound the alarm quickly about any baby furniture or baby bedding items that pose a threat to small, defenseless children and infants.

What Parents Can Do

Today cribs and other baby furniture products are designed to meet high standards in regards to baby safety guidelines. With quality juvenile and infant furnishings and accessories parents can provide outstanding infant and toddler safety measures at all hours of the day or night. Knowing that you have a healthy, contented young one is a joy and a safe environment is easy for any parent to arrange if they are aware of some of the main baby safety concerns.

Here are some guidelines to use when you want to make sure that you are addressing baby safety issues properly with your selections of baby furniture and bedding items.

o    There should be at least a height of 26″ that you can measure from the top of the crib mattress to the top of the crib rail in a raised position.

o    No less than 9″ should be present between the top of the crib mattress and the crib railing when it is lowered.

o    Any slats or bars in the crib sides should be 2 3/8 inches or less for ideal baby safety.

o    Never choose items with cut out features present in the headboards or footboards when choosing nursery furnishings.

o    Decorative knobs might be fancy and elegant but do not use any crib which features them because they are a danger to baby and toddler safety.

o    Any corner post of the crib should be the same height as the headboard and footboard. These should never extend higher than the anchor panels on any baby      furniture being used as a crib in your nursery.

o    Metal supports in baby cribs will firmly support the mattress. This baby safety feature will give you superior infant safety and also excellent toddler safety. Don’t forget that those bouncing babies became bouncing toddlers quickly.

o    Cribs should not be shaky when you push against them with a little force. All baby furniture should be sturdy and solid. This gives you the highest amount of baby safety in any infant or toddler’s room.

o    Any drop side latch on a crib should always have 2 separate movements to unlock them.

o    For toddler safety, as well as baby safety, make certain that any type of knee release on a crib can not be activated by a child who is crawling about on the floor.

o    Always research any juvenile product you are buying to make sure that it safe for babies, toddlers or children. Also send in your registration cards because this will let you be aware instantly of any type of recall or baby safety problem that may be discovered in the future.
